shock absorber
it is a very simple job to change its just a bolt at the top and a bolt at the bottom of the shock absorber, it is advised to change both of the front shock absorbers at the same time you dont need any special tools as long as it is only the shock you are changing wot suspension is it (wet hydrolastic or dry rubber cone) because it may be your cone that is damaged not the shock and u need a cone compressor to change the cone thanks cal

Ive been thinking and after the head ache had gone away i wondered if it made any difference to fit stiffer shocks to the front? and how hard is it to change the back ones? Cheers

Koni Shock absorbers
Hi everyone,
I have just begun to fit a new set of koni special shocks and have come across a few problems! The front ones went on ok but then i realised they might be at different ride settings as they are adjustable. How do you actually adjust these shocks and make sure they are the same on each side? Also, do they ride higher than the standard shocks?
To install the rear left shock i need to remove the fuel tank, are there any trouble spots i should look out for? It seems like a lot of work, should i get it done by a pro?
Cheers for the help guys, Danny

Don't know about the Koni's, but the fuel tank is easy: just release the strap that goes round the tank, take the fuel cap off, and you can then manhandle it out of the way. You don't need to move it more than a few inches, so the pipes don't have to be removed.

Good afternoon,
The adjustment can make the shocks harder or softer but not alter the height. Are the shocks the same as fitted to the Sportspack Mini?

Cheers guys,
Yeah they are. I believe that all the sport pack cars came with the same shocks. It looks like the car is sitting just less than a inch higher than it used to. The difference must be noticeable due to the 12" wheels rather than 13s. Do you know how to adjust the ride setting? Regarding the fuel tank, its nearly empty on the dial but do i need to completely drain it?
Always a great help, thanks people. Danny

Adjusting the dampers - Wind them all the way to soft then back three clicks and start there. If the + - markings are not visible, softest settings are usually when the adjuster is easiest to turn.
Fuel tank - try to get the cap back on when you move it out of the way just in case it leans too far over and slips into the spare tyre well. I'd disconnect both sides of the battery first before you go near the tank just in case you snag a wire for the rear lights and cause a spark.

If they are sportspack shocks, there are no + or - markings. The adjustment is done by removing them completely, take out the plastic stop and rubber from under the top. Push the shock all the way down and turn anti clockwise until you hear a click.
Now the shock can be adjusted to stiffen by 1.5 turns. Repeat if necessary and to soften, follow the same process but turn closkwise while pushing down until it clicks.
Personally, this is the reason why I bought a set of GAZ adjustable shocks. It easier and less fiddly to adjust.

Front cone springs
Check the shock absorbers separately - I had a set that were virtually seized solid.

Rear Wheels Rubbing...
no, its got minifin drums fitted, the tyres are rubbing on the original wheel arch lip there is plenty of clearance on the inside towards the wheel arch & the shock absorber, the centre of the tyre tread is the part that rubs, no where else is affected, would stffer shock absorbers help?

SUSPENSION CONES
The rear cones and trumpets will come out fairly easily if you just drop the radius arm right down (need to remove the shock absorbers first)

wheel catching the wheel arch
Dont know if anyone has experienced this before! when i am reversing on full lock the front passenger wheel catches the back of the wheel arch, as though the shock absorber is too low. After replacing the front shock absorbers, and expecting the problem to stop, i am still getting the same problem. is there anything i can do to stop this problem, anything else that needs replacing or does something different shock absorbers etc. Thanks for any help Olly

Creaking on full lock
Any advice on this one would be greatly appreciated as I have got a creaking sound coming from the front on partial and full lock. I have replaced all the bushes, wheel bearings and drivers side cv joint to no avail the only thing I haven`t changed yet is the top arm bearings on both sides and the shock absorbers for the lowered variety. The subframe has solid mounts and the car has been lowered slightly. The noise is driving me nuts. Any help would be greatly recieved.

reer wheel bent like this ( / )
It can be quite difficult to assess play in the radius arm bushes without jacking the car up and removing the shock absorber. If youre absolutely sure its not that (and bear in mind that any mini over 10 years old is likely to suffer from this if it hasnt been properly maintained) then its possible the subframe is damaged, or the radius arm itself (or the stub axle) are bent.

kind of knocking noise!!
It's just possible that the tyre is rubbing on shock absorber in one spot (maybe it's bulging). If the sound is related to road speed then it's got to be something simple like this.
